Lobbying for a Redress Procedure The purpose of Americans for Terror Watch List Reform is to work towards a formal process to remove innocent Americans from the FBI's Terror Watch List.
Why We Need to Fix the List (1) Uncontrolled Growth. Since
9/11, the list has grown from 1,000 names to more than 755,000 names.
According to law enforcement officials, the sheer size of the list
renders it useless as a tool for law enforcement agencies.
(2) Civil Liberties. Uncertainty surrounding the list infringes on individual civil liberties. Procedures to get off the list are classified for national security reasons. Access to the list has grown, raising concerns beyond minor hassles at
the airport. Americans on the list can be denied mortgages and student
loans, lose their jobs, be labeled as terror suspects on routine
traffic stops, or be detained traveling abroad. We are all at risk if law enforcement agencies are distracted tracking tens of thousands of innocent Americans.
